Update on the motorcycle test review
The Department for Transport has published on its website a public notice providing
an update on the motorcycle test review, together with a summary of the phase 1 research.
The public notice also sets out the next steps for the review.
In the meantime, DSA is working with trainers in priority areas to identify and address
candidates’ needs. This includes making tests more accessible by using local, non-DSA
sites on a part time casual hire basis.
In addition, in some areas DSA will offer back to back single event testing where
trainers can book both modules together so that candidates can take module 2 immediately
if they pass module 1.
DSA will offer this as an option at the following locations from the early part of
summer this year:
- Uxbridge
- Farnborough
- Burton on Trent
- Bristol
- Rotherham
- Blackburn and Darwen
- Birmingham Garretts Green
- Swansea
- Glasgow Shieldhall
- Newport Gwent
Initially there will be limited tests in these locations only. DSA will monitor the
delivery and uptake of back to back single event testing as part of the ongoing motorcycle
test review.
DSA has also recruited more examiners and made improvements to the test booking process
to ensure that motorcycle test slots are available in the right places at the right
times, particularly during the summer when demand is highest.
s updated its module 1 motorcycle test film
DSA has recently updated its film about the module 1 test.
The film gives advice about eligibility for the test, what documents to being, and
advice on appropriate clothing.
It also shows you what takes place in the waiting room and on the motorcycle manoeuvring
area: watch the slow manoeuvres and the high speed manoeuvres, one-by-one.
You can watch the film on DSA's YouTube channel

Road Safety DVD
A new road safety DVD focusing specifically on commuter PTW riders in towns and cities
has been launched in Leeds. The Commuter Survival Guide for Motorists looks at planning
and positioning from an urban perspective .Filmed on location in west Yorkshire,
the DVD covers a number of real world scenarios that riders commonly face. It looks
at how riders can mitigate the dangers that the constantly changing urban road environment
presents. David Glanville, west Yorkshire PTW road safety officer, said: “Riding
in town requires a different skill set to negotiating country roads.“Yes, speeds
in town are generally a lot lower but there are far more potential hazards and riders
can’t always rely on other road users to do the right thing. This resource should
help riders get to and from work more safely and efficiently.”click here

A motorcycle road safety from 1955, made by the Liverpool Motorcycle dealership Victor Horsmans. It is filmed in and around The Wirral and Liverpool City Centre. The film features various riders such as Nobby Clark (not sure if this was Mike Hailwoods mechanic) Bill Quinn, Eric Wilson, Keith Walker and Ken Morris who all seem to be local Merseyside riders, well known in the TT ISDT etc.
